Since starting her beading journey 24 years ago, Katie has learned and experimented with different beading techniques, creating contemporary pieces while also reaching to her past memories, identity and familial ties to develop her beading practice today. Join Katie to hear about her journey of beadwork, see beadwork she has created over the years, the stories within her pieces, and the different techniques she has incorporated into her work. Katie will also be sharing about her favourite materials, beads and techniques she pracitces, and will be demonstrating her favourite stitches and design process.
Bio: Katie Longboat is a Cree and Mohawk beadwork artist from Six Nations of the Grand River. Her beadwork incorporates floral designs, contemporary materials and bold colours to create unique jewelry pieces and beaded artwork. Katie is inspired to create work that is reflective of her family and background, the natural world, and draws inspiration from both Cree and Mohawk styles of beadwork. Katie currently resides in Toronto, Ontario.
